Auto mechanics service brakes, clutches and engines on cars and trucks. For decades, brake shoes, brake pads and clutch facings were commonly made with asbestos because it handled heat and friction well. Every brake job produced dust inside the drum or housing, and the ways mechanics cleaned that dust often put it into the air. Mechanics at busy shops could handle several brake jobs a day, and the dust often settled on floors, benches and clothing between jobs.

How asbestos became part of the job

Asbestos friction materials were standard in American vehicles for much of the twentieth century. As brake linings wore, they turned into fine dust that collected inside drums and housings. Mechanics routinely blew that dust out with compressed air, brushed it away or wiped it with rags, and many ground or beveled new linings to fit. Clutch jobs created similar dust, and some engine gaskets also contained asbestos. Independent garages, dealership service bays, gas stations and fleet shops all did this work, often many times a day. Because vehicles and replacement parts stayed on the road long after new products changed, mechanics could encounter asbestos brake dust for years. Home mechanics who did their own brake work could be exposed too, as could family members exposed to dust carried home on clothing.
