Boilermakers build, install and repair the large boilers and pressure vessels that power plants, refineries, factories and ships depend on. For much of the last century, nearly every boiler they touched was wrapped, lined or sealed with asbestos. Their work meant cutting into that insulation, tearing out worn refractory and fitting new components in hot, tight spaces with little fresh air. Many traveled through their union hall, so one career could cover dozens of plants.
How asbestos became part of the job
Boilers run at extreme temperatures, so for decades manufacturers and builders relied on asbestos to hold in heat and resist fire. Boilermakers encountered it in block insulation on boiler walls, refractory cement lining fireboxes, rope packing around doors and gaskets on every flanged connection. New installations meant cutting and fitting these materials, while repairs meant chipping out old refractory that had turned brittle from years of heat. Many boilermakers traveled from job to job through their union hall, working outages at utilities, mills and refineries where several crews tore into insulation at once. Because the trade moved between so many facilities, a single boilermaker's career can involve dozens of worksites and many different asbestos products, which is why a detailed job list matters.
