Mesothelioma and asbestos exposure in Port Arthur

Port Arthur was built around oil. Within a few years of the Spindletop discovery, major refineries opened along Sabine Lake, and they grew into some of the biggest in the world. Every refinery unit needed insulation to hold heat, and for most of the twentieth century that insulation often contained asbestos. Pipefitters, insulators and boilermakers cut and fitted asbestos pipe covering and block, while operators worked daily beside insulated equipment that wore down and shed dust over time. During these periods, hundreds of contract workers arrived to strip old insulation, replace gaskets and rebuild equipment, often working in dusty, crowded conditions. Many Port Arthur families have more than one relative who worked these jobs. Home exposure was also common, since dusty coveralls were often washed with the family laundry. Local unions and contractor companies kept dispatch and payroll records that can still help show who worked which turnaround.
