Mesothelioma and asbestos exposure in Lake Charles

Lake Charles grew into an industrial center in the mid-twentieth century as refineries and chemical plants rose along the Calcasieu River and the ship channel. The Cities Service refinery, later operated by Citgo, and the Conoco refinery in Westlake became major employers. Refining relies on high heat, and asbestos insulation was used on furnaces, distillation towers and steam piping for decades. Operators, boilermakers and pipefitters maintained that equipment year after year, and each repair or leak meant cutting into insulation that contained asbestos. Workers on nearby jobs breathed the same dust, often without knowing it.

Chemical manufacturing, including PPG's large complex, expanded the industrial workforce further. Much of the insulation work was done by contractors during planned shutdowns, when crews removed and replaced insulation across entire units in a matter of weeks. Workers commonly moved between plants and sometimes to Texas refineries nearby, so their exposure histories often include several employers in two states. Household exposure from dusty clothing affected families as well. Because southwest Louisiana workers often crossed the state line, a careful review of where each job took place is especially important here.
