Los Angeles, CA
Mesothelioma and asbestos exposure in Los Angeles
Los Angeles combined oil refining, aircraft manufacturing, shipbuilding and a massive construction boom. Each of these used asbestos, so exposure in the region reaches refinery crews, aerospace workers, shipbuilders and building tradespeople. Many Los Angeles retirees have exposure from more than one of these industries.

How asbestos reached Los Angeles workplaces
Oil was discovered in Los Angeles in the late 1800s, and refineries in El Segundo, Torrance and the harbor area grew into major complexes. Their heaters, towers and steam lines were insulated with asbestos, and maintenance crews repeatedly handled that material. The harbor at San Pedro also had shipyards that built and repaired ships, especially during World War II. Refinery turnarounds brought large crews of contract workers who removed and replaced insulation on a tight schedule. Harbor shipyards, meanwhile, overhauled vessels in cramped engine rooms where dust built up quickly. Many workers moved between refinery, shipyard and power plant jobs over the years, adding to their exposure histories.
The region became a center for aircraft production, with plants in Santa Monica, Burbank and elsewhere, where older buildings and some heat-related materials contained asbestos. Coal and gas power plants along the coast used asbestos insulation on boilers and turbines. Rapid postwar construction brought asbestos fireproofing, pipe insulation, flooring and joint compound into homes, schools and offices across the county. Union halls in Los Angeles County dispatched insulators, pipefitters and electricians to job sites throughout the region, from aircraft plants to high-rise construction. Custodians and building engineers in older schools and offices could also encounter asbestos during repairs. Home remodelers working on older houses could disturb asbestos flooring and ceiling materials too.

Exposure sites
Where Los Angeles workers encountered asbestos
Historic workplaces most often named in local exposure histories.
El Segundo refinery
Oil refineryEl Segundo
A large coastal refinery whose process units and piping were historically insulated with asbestos, exposing operators and maintenance contractors. Contractors from across the region worked there.
Torrance refinery
Oil refineryTorrance
A long-running refinery where heaters, towers and steam systems used asbestos insulation and gaskets for decades. Turnarounds brought in large contract crews from across Southern California.
Todd Shipyards San Pedro
Commercial shipyardSan Pedro
A harbor shipyard that built and repaired vessels, where engine room and piping work involved asbestos insulation. The yard later closed, but many former workers still live nearby.
Scattergood and Haynes generating stations
Power stationsPlaya del Rey and Long Beach
Coastal power plants whose boilers and turbines were insulated with asbestos and disturbed during maintenance. Local union crews did much of that work during outages.

Bringing a claim from Los Angeles
Los Angeles asbestos cases are commonly filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. California deadlines can be short, so starting early helps. Many Los Angeles workers held jobs across refineries, aircraft plants and construction, so listing every employer and job site is important. A free case review can help build that list. Keep union cards, pay stubs and any records of plant badges together in one place.
