Firefighters enter burning, damaged and collapsing buildings where older construction materials are breaking apart. Many buildings constructed before the 1980s contain asbestos in insulation, ceilings, flooring and roofing. During fires and overhaul, those materials can be damaged and release fibers, and firefighters have also worked around asbestos in older stations and equipment. Their risk comes from many incidents over a long career, and department practices on breathing protection during cleanup make a real difference.
How asbestos became part of the job
Firefighters' asbestos exposure differs from that of most trades because it comes from emergencies rather than routine installation. When older buildings burn or are torn apart during overhaul, asbestos in ceilings, pipe insulation, walls and roofing can be disturbed. Overhaul, the stage when firefighters open walls and ceilings to find hidden fire, can be especially dusty, and crews have sometimes removed breathing protection once flames are out. Older protective gear and station equipment were also reported to contain asbestos in some eras. Structural collapse and cleanup after large incidents create additional risk. Because firefighters respond to many buildings over a career, their exposure is often spread across countless incidents, and documenting representative fires and department practices is usually more practical than listing every call.
