Mesothelioma and asbestos exposure in Detroit

The auto industry made Detroit famous, and asbestos was part of that story. Large factories also had powerhouses, ovens and steam systems insulated with asbestos. Maintenance workers who kept these plants running cut and replaced that insulation during repairs and retooling. Workers in nearby areas could be exposed even if they never touched asbestos, because dust drifted across large, open factory floors.

Detroit's industry extended well beyond car assembly. Steel mills along the Detroit River supplied the auto plants, and coal-fired power stations kept the region running. Both relied on asbestos insulation, furnace linings and protective gear. Auto mechanics across the region also worked with asbestos brake parts for decades, often cleaning brake drums with compressed air. Many Detroit families have a parent or grandparent who worked in one or more of these settings. Many independent repair shops and dealerships across the metro area did brake and clutch work every day. Those mechanics may have handled asbestos friction products for years without any warning labels.
