Mesothelioma and asbestos exposure in Pensacola

Naval Air Station Pensacola has trained Navy and Marine aviators for more than a century and has hosted aircraft maintenance and repair work for much of that time. Engine and airframe repair, older hangars and base heating systems all involved materials that could contain asbestos. Gulf Power's Plant Crist generated electricity with large boilers and turbines, a nylon fiber plant operated north of the city for decades, and a paper mill in nearby Cantonment ran steam-heavy equipment. Maintenance trades moved among these sites during outages, handling insulation, gaskets and packing that were standard before the 1980s. Workers who spent careers at these plants, and the contractors who serviced them, make up a meaningful share of Panhandle mesothelioma claims alongside the region's many Navy veterans. Some families include both, with one generation in uniform and the next in the plants.
