HVAC and sheet metal workers installed and serviced the systems that heated and cooled buildings. In earlier decades, duct insulation, furnace cements, tapes and gaskets often contained asbestos. Tearing out old systems could be especially dusty, and much of the work happened in attics, crawlspaces and mechanical rooms where the air barely moved and dust had nowhere to go.

Removing old ductwork and furnaces

Replacement jobs meant taking out existing equipment before new systems could go in. Old duct wrap, furnace insulation and the cement used to seal joints could crumble the moment they were disturbed. Workers pulled, cut and bent these materials by hand, and debris often fell straight onto their heads and shoulders. When the old system had been in place for decades, the materials were usually dry and brittle, which made the dust worse. If you did replacement work, describe what you removed, how you removed it, and whether cleanup involved sweeping, shop vacuums or blowing dust out with air.

Confined spaces with little airflow

Much HVAC work happened in attics, crawlspaces, basements and ceiling voids. These areas were tight and poorly ventilated, so any dust stayed concentrated around the worker instead of drifting away. Many technicians remember crawling on their backs beneath old ducts or working hunched over in hot attics for hours. Those conditions matter, because they increase how much dust a person breathes during each job. When you list your jobs, note which ones involved confined spaces, roughly how long you spent in them, and whether you were cutting or removing old materials while you were there.

Sealing materials and furnace repair

Furnace and boiler repair involved more than ducts. Technicians replaced gaskets, rope seals and insulating panels, and some used cement or tape to seal joints and seams. In older equipment, these components could contain asbestos. Scraping old gaskets or chipping away dried cement created dust inside small, enclosed cabinets and rooms. These tasks can seem minor compared to large tear-outs, but repeated over years of service calls they may add up to meaningful exposure. Include them when describing your work, even if you did them only occasionally, and note the kinds of equipment you serviced most.
