Machinists

Machinists regularly replaced gaskets and valve or pump packing, and many of these parts contained asbestos in earlier decades. Machinist's mates in the Navy worked in engine rooms and machinery spaces filled with insulated steam lines, pumps and turbines. They often repaired equipment at sea, disturbing insulation and replacing gaskets in cramped, hot compartments. Shipyard machinists faced similar conditions during overhauls, often alongside insulators and pipefitters.
